FASH 212, 213, 214 SEWING LABS - If you are enrolled in a sewing class, we recommend ALL students enroll in a lab. You only need to complete a minimum of 20 hours during the semester (ie you do not need to attend every class, just when you need to work on your project). Students must only come to the lab they are signed up for. You cannot be in the sewing classroom (and operate the sewing equipment) unless you are in a class or lab. OPEN LABS: Weds Night with Instructor Byron, Thursday Night with Instructor West, and Saturdays with Instructor Hill.

Trash for Fashion - Fashion Club Contest

What is trash? Trash can take any form, whether its beer cans, trash bags, and magazines. The next question is can trash be used to create fashion? A few weeks ago Fashion students were given this challenge; to create trash into fashion and last week the Fashion Club was able to display the students’ work. All work varied in degree when it came to the garments, some of the garments were made from trash bags, magazines, and beer cans, yet the material held a uniqueness that was their own and were assembled in great fashion. Here are some of the pictures from the event:

Brandi Borchard, a Saddleback College Fashion Student, recently had a dress she made in FASH 132 Draping (in Spring 2010) on the Italian Vogue website! Earlier in the year she did a photoshoot with 16 year old prodigal photographer Raul Romo and he did an editorial based around the dress. The dress is made out of plastic bags. Brandi currently designs a swimwear line "Bonsoir Bella" and has a great success with it. She has been featured also in Alt Noir, Prism, and Votive magazines, but this is her first and only non-swimwear/lingerie shoot. Please check out her website and facebook below.

Day of the Dead Event in San Juan Capistrano

Day of the Dead, a celebration of life and death, took place the other day at the San Juan Capistrano Library. Festivities consisted of Mexican food, candy skull decoration, coloring masks, and selling various goods, plus alters dedicated to the dead. One alter in particular was created in honor of Dr. Seuss. Music took a huge place at the library, as two Mariachi bands performed; one of them was from Dana Hills High School.

One artist Judith Anderson, wore a skull decorated with flowers was made by Sacia O …fascinating, also she created a alter to her mother-law-mother. Overall the day was fun for all.

Volunteer for Our 2011 Annual Fashion Show
The 2011 Freedom and Fashion Annual Show is quickly approaching and we are now accepting volunteers! Volunteers will be committing to at least 30 hours of volunteer service total throughout the time of your volunteer commitment with us. Dates of the volunteer commitment are as follows: 11/26 and 12/10 (both Saturdays) for volunteer training sessions. 12/16 for rehearsal and 12/17 for the Fashion Show.

The ever-endearing Southern California theme of palm trees and chic-style, the theme of the last fashion show for “Style Week O.C.” was “Going Out In Style” run away show at Fashion Island on October 8 at 7 p.m. The runaway show for Fashion Island was centered between Neiman Marcus, Blooming Dale, and other stylish stores, with an audience who were eager to see the new fashions for the fall.

The stores that showed their new trends were:

Trina Turk
Gary’s New Port Beach
Vince
American Ray CTE
Elie Tahari
Neiman Marcus

The show did not hold back, all stores (mentioned above) had not just the new and sexy trends for women, with dresses that showed the woman’s figure and hats (which are making a come back) but also for men, styling coats and pants that looked sleek and were fashion forward.

Hand & Lock PRIZE FOR EMBROIDERY 2012

As we congratulate the winners of this years' Prize, we encourage students from all over the world to apply for the Hand & Lock Prize 2012. Themes this year include Celebration, in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Read the brief and find out more about submission guidelines here . Now in its twelfth year, this prestigious international prize has attracted students of embroidery, design, carts, surface textiles, costume, fibres, interiors, fashion and textiles throughout the world. This year the prize is open to both full and part time students, including research and graduate students as of 31 March 2010. Registration is now open, and we are excited to see what the coming year's entrants will bring.

Flat Sketching in Adobe Illustrator (Basic Flats) in Los Angeles

This course is for beginners to intermediate skill levels.

This course is a 'hands-on', exercise driven workshop. We start with Illustrator's user interface and toolset and progress quickly from basic shape drawing to actual sketching with the 'pen-tool'.
We will also cover:
· Creating 'libraries' of assets such as buttons and trims
· Basic stitches
· Basic fills
· Pantones and other proprietary color palettes
· Using a croquis as a 'base template' for creating your own flat
· Saving the file so it can be emailed easily and opened by any computer

Step by step workbooks with screen captures of each step along with companion CD-ROM containing supporting files and completed versions of each exercise are provided for each registered trainee to keep, thus insuring the class content goes home with you when class is over.

Volunteer to Fit Marine Ball Gowns this Saturday!

This Saturday, Oct. 8 there is an opportunity to volunteer at Camp Pendleton helping Marine wives and daughters select and fit donated gowns for the Marine Ball. The free gown event is put on by the city of Mission Viejo and there will also be employees from the city of Mission Viejo at Camp Pendleton.
Students would need to be at the San Juan Capistrano Costco at 8am to carpool to Camp Pendleton. The event will end at 12 noon.

Entrepreneur Student Workshop

By popular demand, we are very excited to offer “What’s Your Big Idea?” a student/faculty entrepreneur workshop. Because today’s employers no longer promise job security, employees must be prepared to manage their own careers. Whether our students plan on opening their own businesses or prefer to work as employees, they need to develop an entrepreneurial mindset to succeed.

Our March 2011 session was over capacity. Now we offer our FREE seminar again on November 4 at Mission College, Santa Clara, and November 18 at the Energy Resource Center, Downey. In spring we will also hold the workshop in the Sacramento area.

Come and meet FCS student entrepreneurs, begin to take the steps necessary for entrepreneurship, and consult with experts. Take home a guide to being a successful entrepreneur. Faculty will learn strategies to use in the classroom.

After the student event, faculty are invited to stay for coffee (1:15-2:30) and talk with other faculty about issues and challenges facing the community college. Break-outs sessions by discipline wherever possible.

You may have already received a hard copy of poster. Please post it for students and encourage registration for this free event. Maybe even extra credit?

Hats: A Millinery Delight

Hats have been making a strong comeback over the last few years, especially for girls and young women. Hats are becoming a new fashion trend; pick up any magazine, from Vogue to Nylon and you’ll see an actress, model, or someone that the journalist is interviewing, wearing some sleek or interesting hat. Even in the wedding of the century, that of Prince William and Princess Katherine, some of the royal family were showing off their tastes in hats, or in this case fascinators.
I myself was never a hat person. The closest thing I saw of interesting or bold hats was in period pieces movies or on the run away. These hats didn’t speak to me, or when I saw them on the run away, appeared unattainable. Even ads, whether in magazines or TV appeared to be out of my range or geared towards men, with cool looks and patterns. But when it came to girls and young women, the hats for us seemed bland, or non-existent; giving little variety in hats for women. That is until now.
Last year I bought a cute fedora hat from Kohl’s. It’s a simple fedora hat, black material, but what spoke to me was the flower on the side. I instantly knew I wanted it. That was my first hat, but not the only hat that I would own. This past summer I was fortunate enough to travel to New York with other fashion students from the Fashion students from the Fashion Department and see New York and its bountiful fashion houses. One place especially that I loved and which held my next hat was Custom Fabric Flowers by M.S.Schmalberg Inc. This place was wonderful, showing us how they make flowers, what actresses wore their flowers on gowns and movies, to showing us where their flowers appeared in magazines and other ads. But while seeing the work room, I fell in love with their hats, including this fedora hat, brown simple yet pretty hat accented nicely with flowers. I knew right then and there I had to have this hat. I asked if the hat was for sale, and luckily enough for me it was. Without thinking about it, I whipped out my credit card and purchased the hat. I wasn’t considering about the price, I just knew I had to have the hat. That was the most expensive thing (beside food) that I bought, but I didn’t care, the hat was mine and it was coming back with me to California to join my other two hats.
Now I’m happy to announce this semester my sister and I are taking a fashion class making hats. It’s the Millinery Hat class, taught by Joan Goodspeed. Our first project is making fascinators, and let me tell you, it boggles the mind of what we can use and put on the fascinators. Since beginning this project, I’ve been searching the Internet trying to find website or blogs of people who make hats and fascinators. One place which offers hat designers is etsy, but also too if one searches Goggle and put blog and hats, one will be introduced to people who make millinery their lively hood. Now I don’t know if my fascinator will be great or even pretty; but I am having fun making something that I can wear, when I’m dressing up or dressing down, a hat or fascinator will be accompanying me.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents a major retrospective exploring the full range of Tim Burton's creative work, both as a film director and as an artist, illustrator, photographer, and writer.

Tim Burton was born in Burbank in 1958. After studying at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), he worked as an animator at the Walt Disney Studios before breaking out on his own. Taking inspiration from popular culture, fairy tales and traditions of the gothic, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as an expression of a personal vision.

The exhibition brings together over 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera, including art from a number of unrealized and little-known personal projects. Many of these objects come from the artist's own archive, as well as from studio archives and private collections of Burton's collaborators. Hundreds of never-before-exhibited artworks and sketches will be joined by a selection of film posters accompanied by music composed for the exhibition by Burton's longtime collaborator Danny Elfman.

Two large-scale outdoor artworks are also installed on campus: a topiary inspired by Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Balloon Boy, an enormous figure based on an amalgamation of characters that Burton first introduced in his 1997 book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories.

Tim Burton will open at 10 am every Saturday & Sunday through the run of the exhibition beginning October 1.

This exhibition was organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York.The Los Angeles presentation was made possible in part by LACMA’s Wallis Annenberg Director’s Endowment Fund.

Julia has been working in the Apparel Industry her entire career and has watched Computer Aided Design begin and develop from the days of DOS to today's sophisticated Virtual 3D technology. Julia attended the University of Delaware where she studied Fashion Design and Art, receiving a Bachelor of Arts with a Degree of Distinction. She then studied abroad in Helsinki, Finland at the University of Industrial Arts which was one of the first universities to implement Computer Aided Design. She continued to pursue a career as a CAD Specialist/Manager while learning from company owners, production room managers, pattern makers, graders, and designers.

This course is for beginner to intermediate to skill levels and is a 'hands-on', exercise driven workshop. In this course we will take a series of photos, separate the subject from the background and then composite the images in a presentational layout. We will add text, fabric swatch images and then save the document in a format that can be emailed and opened by any computer.
The images above are samples of the work we do in this course.
This course covers:
· Photoshop's Basic User interface and toolset
· Effectively separating image elements from the background
· Layer masks explained
· Filters
· Color management (insure the colors you see are the colors you print!)
· Accessing Pantones
· Saving in formats that can be emailed and opened on any computer!
Step by step workbooks with screen captures of each step along with companion CD-ROM containing supporting files and completed versions of each exercise are provided for each registered trainee to keep, thus insuring the class content goes home with you when class is over.

Online apparel sales - Barriers to growth

The 2011 Design Exhibition Submission Site is now open on the ITAA Website. Templates, directions for preparing documents, instructions for online submissions, and links to complete the submission process all are located on the "Submissions" page. Document preparation is very similar to last year, but please note that there are changes in naming files and in completing the online submission.

Tomorrow: "Take Back The Night" At UC Riverside

UCR's "The Well" Center and R.E.A.C.H. is hosting "Take Back The Night" on Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 at 6pm to 9pm in Highlander Union Plaza. Freedom and Fashion and our friends from LiNK will be at the event bring awareness to our causes. Come join us and hear the voices of women and victims of abuse and sexual violence and help our world work toward eliminating sexual violence. Speakers, presenters and vendors will be at this event, accompanied by performances with an expected 1,000 people in attendance.

Take Back The Night has always understood the power of speaking out. Rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse and domestic violence are often labeled “crimes of silence” because of low reporting rates and social discomfort with their public discussion. Survivors of sexual assault, rape, domestic violence, and sexual abuse have been invited to shatter the silence at this event.

CONGRATS!!! Three Saddleback College students won the Merchandising Problem assignment for the California Community College Fashion Symposium. The students were in Michelle Craner's FASH 143 Buying and Merchandising course and won 1-3 place. Other students participated in the fashion show and denim deconstruction contests.

Textile and Product Design Challenge

Our friends at Design21 are hosting a great new competition and we want our BurdaStyle members to get involved! The contest offers two categories in which to submit: textile design and product design. The winning entries will be produced and sold by Grameen Felissimo, benefiting the local markets and communities of Bangladesh through employment and economic independence.

This challenge focuses on the importance of social and cause-driven business. “Grameen Felissimo” was launched in February 2011 in conjunction with the Yunus Centre, led by 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus. The joint social business aims to contribute to the future generations of the sovereign state of Bangladesh by providing employment to the underprivileged while enhancing the unique artistic culture of the area.

Looking to put the power of design into action, Design21 challenges entrants to create textiles and products that can be seen as a symbol of Hope. Built around the Grameen check, a fabric usually made in the poorest regions of Bangladesh, Grameen Felissimo wants to commemorate the founding of it’s philanthropic project by having contestants design either a new check patterned textile or a product using check patterned fabric. EDI BootCamp: Class Description

This class provides a comprehensive operational view of EDI and all the elements necessary to successfully do business with large retailers while minimizing errors and chargebacks. Labels, barcodes, UPC codes, Routing, carton labeling, ASNs, and all the other major components necessary for the successful functioning of the EDI process including the various transaction sets are covered and explained. Class graduates will have the necessary tools and a thorough overview understanding of how to plan for and maintain a successful EDI implementation with retail trading partners. This is an online class consisting of two segments of 3 hrs each. Contact FBI for hardware and software requirements.

Who Should Attend This Class:

1. Fashion business owners who have not yet done EDI and want to plan for the operational details and costs involved. 2. CEO's who have gotten their first order from a major retailer and urgently need background on where to begin and what to do. 3. Firms who have begun doing some EDI but have need for a designated person in house who can be the EDI coordinator to ensure smooth, cost effective operation, prevent and resolve chargebacks, and plan for new retail clients. This course will bring your selected candidate with limited or no EDI background up to speed and provide a good working foundation for quickly being effective and productive.

Who Should NOT Attend This Class: If you primarily need operational training on a specific EDI software package, contact the vendor of your software. This course is not designed to cover training in the operation of specific vendor systems. NOTE: Need a class sooner than the scheduled one? Saddleback College to Raise the Woof at Dog Fair
Mission Viejo, CA – Saddleback College will welcome a new breed of student at the college’s first Dog Fair to be held on Friday, April 22nd from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Dogs and their owners are invited to the campus for events and activities, including a dog walk, dog kissing booth, contests such as best owner/dog look-alikes, and information on Earth-friendly dog dishes, dog-safe plants, health care, and more. The $10 event fee includes parking, admission, and two prize drawing tickets. Parking will be available in Lot 9, where the event will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. with a dog walk. Drawings will be held throughout the day. The grand prize is a two-night stay for a dog and his/her owner at the Hills Hotel in Laguna Hills. Proceeds will benefit no-kill shelters and rescues in south Orange County. This event is coordinated by Saddleback College business students and is sponsored in part by the college’s Associated Student Government through a service learning grant. Informational and vendor booths will be provided by Guide Dogs of America, Tracy’s Pots, Help Your Dog Help Others, Pet Country, Armenta Dog Academy, Adoption Corners, and Pearls for Pups. Local veterinarians will also be providing information at the event.
